Which used transformers can you review now?
5 separate used, pre-owned, rebuilt or reconditioned listings are published. Each has its own condition basis and open technical questions. A historical test or rebuild is separate from current inspection, readiness to energize and allocation.
Used, pre-owned, rebuilt and unused mean different things
Pre-owned describes a prior ownership history; it does not establish whether equipment was energized. Previously used equipment needs an operating and maintenance history. Rebuilt or refurbished equipment needs a documented work scope and tests after the work. Unused surplus belongs in a separate condition category.
Three rebuilt ABB 230/13.8 kV transformers
The public lot has a delta high-side winding and a grounded-wye low side. Its published maximum is 59.7 MVA at the stated 65°C basis. Compare each unit's cooling stages, winding connection, taps, insulation and included accessories with the required duty; the lot is not a 100 MVA offering.
Distinct Westinghouse reconditioned and rebuilt offers
The 115/24.9 kV offer represents two 12/16/20/22.4 MVA reconditioned units with new bushings. The separate 66 MVA Westinghouse/GE pair has a supplied report for one unit showing 140.9 kV delta / 34.5 kV wye, different from the nominal 138 kV offer description. Recorded valve leaks and a broken gauge need present repair verification; no readiness-to-energize claim is made.
What should I ask before buying a used transformer?
Request the nameplate, known operating history, preservation records, recent photographs, electrical tests and all documented repair or rebuild work. Ask which records are missing. Match each report to the physical unit and agree on inspection and acceptance requirements before purchase.
- For a rebuilt unit, identify what was repaired or replaced and the test dates following that work.
- Confirm the condition and included scope of bushings, radiators, tap equipment, cooling controls and loose parts.
- Have the responsible project team decide what current inspection and testing evidence is needed.
- Document warranty, inspection rights, loading, transport and any as-is conditions in the unit-specific quotation.
Compare the complete purchase cost
A used transformer price is only one part of the comparison. Review technical compatibility, inspection and testing, required accessories or work, loading, transport, offloading and commissioning responsibilities. A lower purchase price cannot resolve a mismatched winding or insufficient continuous rating.
Request a pre-owned or replacement transformer
Email Tommy the existing nameplate or one-line, required MVA and cooling duty, high- and low-side voltage, winding connections, frequency, quantity, destination and required arrival date. State whether previously energized, rebuilt or only unused equipment is acceptable.
Common questions
Written quotes and supporting records control unit-specific ratings, availability, condition, price, and delivery.
Can I buy used transformers from J&J?
J&J reviews used and rebuilt transformer requirements and publishes specific documented opportunities. ABB rebuilt and Westinghouse reconditioned/rebuilt offers are shown separately from new/unused inventory. Read each condition and documentation limit; current availability requires written confirmation.
Does pre-owned mean refurbished?
No. Prior ownership does not establish refurbishment or operating history. Request the condition statement, any documented work scope and the relevant tests for the exact unit.
Do all used transformers have the same warranty?
No. Warranty provider, coverage, start date, exclusions and inspection terms are specific to the quoted unit. Ask for written terms before relying on a warranty claim.
