Start with the incoming voltage and the bus you need to supply

J&J Transformers LLC accepts large step-down transformer requirements for utility, industrial and data-center projects. Give Tommy the source voltage, required output voltage and continuous MVA or kVA. The public records below identify actual winding arrangements and directional limits; the quotation establishes the selected unit, current allocation, price and delivery.

  • For transmission or substation duty, give the required high-voltage source and downstream bus voltage.
  • For padmount or dry-type supply, give the primary kV, secondary voltage and connection, kVA, enclosure and quantity.
  • For a proposed GSU in step-down operation, request the permitted directional rating and unit-specific engineering review.

What is a step-down transformer?

A step-down transformer supplies a lower-voltage system from a higher-voltage source. A transmission-to-distribution power transformer, an industrial substation transformer and a medium-voltage-to-low-voltage padmount or dry-type transformer can all perform step-down duty. Their voltage levels, construction and project requirements differ.

Start with the actual source and load-bus voltages. A 525/69 kV power transformer still supplies a high-voltage bus; additional transformation is needed to reach a 480Y/277 V or 208Y/120 V equipment supply.

Published equipment records for step-down screening

These records are starting points for engineering review. A listed winding ratio or cooling-stage MVA does not establish that every unit is approved for the proposed step-down duty. Ask for serial-specific records, operating-direction limits, condition, current allocation and the included accessories.

The Royal SMIT 525/69 kV record lists 240/320/400 MVA cooling stages and a separate 250 MVA maximum for step-down duty. The 400 MVA step-up rating is not a 400 MVA step-down rating. Its 13.7 kV buried-delta tertiary is not presented as an accessible external load supply.

High-voltage step-down and substation requirements

J&J accepts 69, 115, 138, 161, 230, 345, 500 and 525 kV step-down transformer requirements. Specify the lower-voltage winding, continuous load and system arrangement alongside the high-side voltage. These are project voltage classes, not a stock claim for every combination.

Keep the actual 525 kV nameplate when considering the Royal SMIT record for a 500 kV system. System compatibility needs explicit review.

Request an exact step-down voltage ratio

Common inquiry formats include high-voltage-to-34.5 kV, high-voltage-to-13.8 kV and transmission-to-transmission step-down duties. Send an exact required ratio even when it is not publicly listed. Nominal voltage, maximum system voltage, taps, insulation, winding connection and frequency are reviewed separately.

5–90 MVA and large step-down transformer inquiries

Send 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75 or 90 MVA substation requirements, or a larger 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400 or 500+ MVA project requirement. J&J can review public equipment and additional sourcing options. A requested size does not mean an exact unit is in stock.

State the required continuous capacity, contingency duty, temperature-rise basis, cooling equipment and site conditions. Keep every candidate's documented cooling stages and separate directional limits; a 40/53.3 MVA record remains a 40/53.3 MVA record.

Three-phase padmount and dry-type step-down supply

For medium-voltage-to-low-voltage service, send the primary voltage and exact secondary arrangement, such as 480Y/277 V, 208Y/120 V or 415 V, with kVA, frequency, grounding, enclosure and installation requirements. Three-phase pad-mounted, dry-type, cast-resin and unit-substation requirements follow their own specifications.

New OEM manufacturing is a separate quotation route from current inventory. J&J's published OEM transformer scope covers requirements up to 10 MVA / 10,000 kVA. The stated OEM delivery target and release conditions stay attached to that manufacturing offer; large high-voltage stock and sourcing inquiries have their own schedule.

Utility, industrial, data-center and emergency step-down projects

A utility system spare, an industrial plant substation, a data-center utility connection and an emergency replacement can require different grounding, bus arrangements, redundancy and acceptance evidence. Send the one-line diagram, load duty and installation constraints with the equipment request.

New, unused, used, rebuilt and surplus step-down inquiries

J&J reviews new, unused, never-energized, used, pre-owned, rebuilt, reconditioned, surplus and canceled-project equipment requirements. Each quotation identifies the actual condition, evidence, inspection scope, accessories, warranty and delivery responsibilities. Price and lead time depend on the selected unit and agreed scope.

Price and delivery inquiries for step-down transformers

For a step-down transformer for sale, request a quotation against the required source voltage, load voltage and duty-specific MVA. A used, unused, surplus or rebuilt unit needs the same technical match; its condition and price do not establish suitability. Identify the required-on-site date so the quote can distinguish equipment readiness from transport and commissioning.

  • Specify the actual ratio, such as 69/13.8, 138/34.5 or 230/34.5 kV, and the continuous rating needed in step-down duty. These are inquiry examples, not an assertion of stock at every ratio.
  • For a substation package, identify whether the scope includes the transformer alone, switchgear, breakers, controls, drawings, spares or transport.

Common questions

Written quotes and supporting records control unit-specific ratings, availability, condition, price, and delivery.

Can I compare an existing surplus step-down transformer with a new-build quotation?

Yes. Compare the exact voltage ratio, permitted continuous MVA or kVA, winding arrangement, condition, available tests, included equipment, warranty and arrival date for each option. Existing equipment retains its own unit-specific delivery terms. New OEM manufacturing has a separately confirmed specification, factory allocation and schedule.

Which documents are needed to price a large step-down transformer?

Send the available one-line or specification, source/output voltages, continuous MVA, quantity, site and required date. For a replacement, include the existing nameplate. Request the candidate's nameplate, drawings, available test and condition records, operating-direction limits, accessory list and the written delivery scope. Open technical items can be identified in the first inquiry.

Where can I buy a utility or industrial step-down transformer?

Contact J&J Transformers LLC in Sugar Land, Texas, serving U.S. projects nationwide. Email tommy@jjtransformers.com or call 346-276-9540 with the source/output voltages, required MVA or kVA, quantity, site and required date. Ask about current equipment or an unlisted requirement.

Can a GSU transformer be used as a step-down transformer?

Some units can be considered for step-down service, but suitability depends on the actual winding arrangement, permitted operating direction and MVA, cooling, grounding, taps, impedance, insulation, protection and project interfaces. Request the unit's nameplate, drawings, test records and any manufacturer restrictions before accepting a candidate.

Do you have every step-down voltage and MVA combination in stock?

No universal stock claim is made. The public equipment records retain exact ratings and condition. J&J also accepts unlisted requirements for sourcing review, with suitability, current availability and schedule established by quotation.

Can the Royal SMIT 525/69 kV transformer deliver 400 MVA step-down?

Its published maximum step-down duty is 250 MVA, separate from the 240/320/400 MVA cooling-stage and step-up information. A 400 MVA step-down requirement needs a different approved rating or candidate.

What information determines step-down transformer price and lead time?

Provide exact voltages, continuous MVA or kVA, duty, winding connections, grounding, taps, impedance basis, required evidence, condition preference, quantity, destination and required date. The selected equipment, inspection, accessories, shipping and acceptance scope determine the written quotation.

Does a high-voltage step-down transformer directly supply 480 V loads?

Only a transformer with the required 480 V secondary arrangement can serve that voltage directly. A high-voltage-to-34.5, 13.8 or 69 kV transformer may require additional distribution transformers, switchgear and protection to supply the final load voltage.

Can J&J help with a step-down transformer that is not listed?

Yes. Send Tommy the source/output voltages, MVA or kVA, quantity, duty, site and required date. You do not need to find a public matching listing before discussing the requirement.

How do I request a step-down transformer price and delivery quote?

Send source/output kV, required MVA, quantity, operating duty, frequency, project location and needed-on-site date. Include the one-line, cooling, winding, grounding and tap requirements. Ask the quotation to identify the candidate, records, included scope, release conditions and delivery assumptions.
