Build one evidence register for the actual unit
Keep the equipment reference, document revision, test date and open questions together. A report for a similar transformer or a manufacturer's general brochure does not establish the offered unit's condition.
| Record | Buyer review |
|---|---|
| Nameplate and drawings | Match serial, winding voltages, cooling-stage MVA, connections, taps and accessories to the offer. |
| Original factory tests | Identify test scope, results, exceptions, concessions and the serial covered by the report. |
| Storage and preservation | Request dated inspection logs, preservation method, maintenance, accessories stored separately and any gaps in the history. |
| Current inspection | Record physical findings, electrical/oil tests, comparison basis, unresolved items and the responsible reviewer. |
| Release and receiving | Agree preparation, transport monitoring, receiving inspection and the evidence needed before energization. |
Agree the inspection scope before arranging the visit
Have the buyer's qualified transformer specialist define the tests and acceptance criteria appropriate to the equipment. Depending on the unit and history, the review may include ratio and vector group, winding resistance, insulation power factor/capacitance, oil analysis and frequency-response comparison.
Ask which original baselines exist, which measurements can be repeated under comparable conditions, and how missing records or exceptions will be handled. A list of test names alone is not an acceptance decision. The inspection proposal should identify access, preparation, test responsibility and the deliverable report.
Unused equipment still needs a storage and receipt review
Never energized describes operating history; it does not replace preservation evidence. Request the manufacturer's instructions applicable to that exact transformer and compare them with the available storage and maintenance records.
Confirm the condition and completeness of bushings, cooling equipment, control cabinets and separately packed accessories. Record any leak, moisture, corrosion or damage findings for specialist review. Follow the applicable handling and receiving instructions; one manufacturer's manual is not a universal procedure for every transformer.
Connect the technical findings to the purchase terms
Ask the quotation to identify the offered condition, documents available, agreed inspection, acceptance exceptions, included accessories, warranty and release conditions. Keep the final technical disposition beside the price and delivery scope.
For immediately available transformers or emergency replacements, send the minimum technical requirements and required arrival date with your inquiry. Ready to inspect, ready to load and delivered to site are separate milestones. J&J confirms current availability and the unit-specific schedule in writing.
Common questions
Written quotes and supporting records control unit-specific ratings, availability, condition, price, and delivery.
Does an original FAT report prove a stored transformer is ready to energize?
The FAT records the tested unit at the time of the factory test. Present condition, storage, transport, assembly and project acceptance require separate review. Ask the responsible specialist to define the additional evidence and tests needed.
Can I request the inspection package before selecting a transformer?
Send the J&J listing reference or your MVA, winding voltages, quantity and required date. Tommy will identify the available records and the inspection arrangements for the actual candidate. Documents are shared directly after contact.
