Transformer nameplate matching for replacements and surplus units

A transformer nameplate is the starting identity record for a replacement or surplus-unit search, but it is not the whole specification. Transcribe it exactly, preserve the serial-specific source, then reconcile the values to the one-line, drawings, test reports, studies, site interfaces, and operating requirements.

Which nameplate fields should be captured exactly?

Record manufacturer, serial, model or type, year, phases, frequency, MVA or kVA by cooling stage, temperature rise, winding voltages and tap positions, connections or vector group, BIL, impedance with MVA and temperature base, cooling, fluid, total weight, fluid weight, and applicable standards.

  • Photograph the complete plate square-on at readable resolution and retain the original file; do not rely on a cropped sales image.
  • Transcribe units, slash ratings, tap notation, temperature bases, and winding labels without normalizing away meaningful differences.
  • Record the source and review date so a later drawing or test report can be reconciled to the same serial.

How should the nameplate be compared to the replacement duty?

Create a requirement-versus-candidate deviation schedule. Compare each electrical, dielectric, thermal, mechanical, controls, accessory, environmental, logistics, documentation, and commercial field with an owner and disposition.

The highest-risk shortcuts are matching only MVA and ratio, ignoring the impedance base, assuming vector compatibility, overlooking LTC/DETC differences, treating a tertiary as unloaded without proof, and ignoring terminal, footprint, weight, protection, or transport interfaces.

Which records are needed beyond the nameplate?

Request final outline and foundation drawings, schematics and wiring, bushing and accessory data, tap-changer data, guaranteed and final test reports, oil and maintenance history, storage and preservation records, transport configuration, manuals, included-scope list, photographs, and current condition evidence.

  • Use final tested impedance where available and preserve its stated MVA, tap, frequency, and temperature basis.
  • Check drawing revisions and title-block serials before treating a document as unit-specific.
  • For a group, require a serial list and state which records apply to each unit.
