Compare the duty definitions on the manufacturer's sheet
Prime commonly describes variable-load duty, standby describes backup duty, and continuous describes a specified constant-load duty. The manufacturer's model-specific definition controls permissible hours, load factors, overload allowances and maintenance requirements.
| Rating stated in the offer | Ask the supplier to confirm |
|---|---|
| Standby / emergency standby | Backup application, permitted operating hours and load profile; whether any other use is approved. |
| Prime | Variable-load basis, allowed average load and any model-specific overload provision. |
| Continuous | Constant-load output and the stated operating and maintenance conditions. |
| Other rating | The full manufacturer's designation and application definition, without relabeling it as prime or continuous. |
Keep frequency and site-rated output beside the MW figure
Compare the actual unit's rating at the required 50 Hz or 60 Hz, voltage and power factor. Confirm the site conditions and the auxiliary equipment included in the output calculation. A model family offered at both frequencies does not prove that an individual unit can operate at either frequency unchanged.
Request the offered package's nameplate, model-specific rating sheet and applicable site-performance information. Record ambient temperature, elevation, fuel requirements and any stated derating. For natural gas equipment, include the available gas specification and supply conditions in the inquiry.
Separate unit totals from the project's usable capacity
Keep the unit electrical rating, auxiliary demand, redundancy basis and required load in separate fields. Ten advertised 2 MW units give a 20 MW nameplate sum; that arithmetic alone does not establish 20 MW of usable site power at every duty and operating condition.
For a phased data-center or industrial project, state the load each phase must support and the required reserve or maintenance allowance. Ask for an equipment schedule identifying each proposed unit, rating basis and included auxiliaries. The project's engineering team determines the accepted operating arrangement.
Send a quotation request that keeps the rating basis clear
Email Tommy the required electrical MW and duty, voltage, frequency, fuel, quantity, condition preference, destination and needed-on-site date. Include the load profile, site conditions and package scope when available.
J&J supplies natural gas and diesel generator packages and can organize multi-unit allocations around the project schedule. For immediately available generators, request the actual unit references and release conditions. Ready to ship, expedited delivery and emergency replacement requirements are confirmed against the selected equipment.
Common questions
Written quotes and supporting records control unit-specific ratings, availability, condition, price, and delivery.
Can I use the standby MW rating as continuous output?
Use only the duty and output approved for the actual model and application. Request the manufacturer's rating definition and the performance basis for your load and site. Do not apply a universal percentage reduction as a substitute for the correct rating sheet.
Do multiple available generators guarantee the advertised total at my site?
The sum of nameplate ratings is a starting comparison. Confirm duty, site conditions, auxiliaries, fuel, redundancy and the accepted operating arrangement before assigning usable project capacity.
